The Cuban President was born on April 20th of 1960 in Santa Clara. His days as a successful student took place at several levels of education. He held positions in the Pioneer Organization, the FEEM and the FEU. As a UJC militant he occupied various positions of responsibility, from the base right up to the National Directorship. He was first Secretary of the Committee of the UJC at the Central University of Santa Clara and member of the Provincial Bureau. He graduated as engineer in electronics and subsequently got his Master’s degree in Leadership.
He has held the positions of First and Second Secretary of the UJC Provincial Committee in Villa Clara and that of Second Secretary in the National Committee until 1993 when he was promoted to working with the Communist Party of Cuba (PCC) as member of the Provincial Bureau in Villa Clara. In 1994 he moved on to fill the position of First Secretary in that province, a job he handled with positive and recognized results. He was elected member of the Central Committee at the Fifth Congress. In 2003, by decision of the country’s leadership, he was moved to Holguin as that province’s First Secretary of the PCC, where he was elected member of the Politburo because of his merit and overall excellent qualities. In 2009 he was appointed Minister of Higher Education and in 2012 as Vice President of the Council of Ministers. He was promoted to First Vice President of the Councils of State and Ministers in 2013 and ratified as member of the Politburo at the Sixth and Seventh PCC Congresses.
He was an Internationalist Cooperator in Nicaragua from 1987 to 1989. He attended the Ñico López Higher School where he received his postgraduate degree in World Economics and he took courses at the National Defense College where he graduated with a First-Level Diploma in Training for Defense. In 2000, he was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. Among his many awards, he has received the following medals: Distinguished Service in the FAR, Vanguard in the DAAFAR, Vanguard in the FEU, Internationalist Cooperator and the Order of Félix Elmusa.
